KIKANOVIC’S GOLDEN GOAL LIFTS MEN’S SOCCER OVER SAN FRANCISCO IN OVERTIME, 3-2

SAN FRANCISCO – The Sacramento State men's soccer team defeated the San Francisco Dons, 3-2, in overtime Sunday night in San Francisco. After the Dons rallied for a late equalizer in the 88th minute, Benji Kikanovic sent the Hornets home with the win with a golden goal in the 94th.

Sacramento State jumped out to an early lead Sunday, gaining the 1-0 advantage thanks to Dom Scotti and his team-leading fifth goal of the year. Kikanovic started the play, dribbling past his defender and driving down the near side of the field. After crashing toward the box, Kikanovic dished one over the middle to a waiting Scotti who one-timed it into the far corner of the goal.

Scotti has now scored five goals in just seven games this season. Dating back to last season, Scotti has scored in nine of his last 13 total games played.

In the second half, Sacramento State doubled their lead thanks to a goal by RJ Moorhouse. In similar fashion to the team's first goal. Josh Dull sent a cross to the waiting Moorhouse just inside the top of the box. Moorhouse drilled one into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Not only was it his first goal of the season, but it was also the first career goal for Moorhouse. A sophomore, Moorhouse took six shots last season but was unable to find the back of the net. He has now scored one goal on five shots this year.

Despite leading 2-0 after 60 minutes, Sacramento State was unable to shut out San Francisco. The Dons refused to go away, getting their first goal on a penalty kick in the 68th minute. 20 minutes later, with less than two minutes remaining on the clock, San Francisco got the equalizer after a free kick landed in the box and was punched in.

The overtime period lasted just three minutes and 44 seconds before Kikanovic knocked home the game-winner. Brad Bumgarner received a service inside the box. Multiple Dons defenders crashed on Bumgarner, who tapped the service back out to Kikanovic near the top of the box. The freshman striker drilled one into the lower far side for the game-winner.

It was Kikanovic's second game-winner of the season after scoring the golden goal in Sacramento State's 5-4 overtime win at CSU Bakersfield. He had another chance in regulation to give the Hornets their third goal of the night on a penalty kick, but was denied after the Dons goalkeeper guessed right and deflected his shot wide.

The win moves Sacramento to 2-5-2 overall on the season. Sunday night's match against San Francisco was also the Hornets' fifth against a WCC program. They finish the year 1-2-2 against the conference.

In addition to their final WCC contest of the season, Sunday night's match was also the second to last non-conference match for the Hornets. They will travel just down the road to UC Davis for a non-conference finale against the Aggies on Sunday.

Sunday's match will kick off at 4:00 pm. More information can always be found by visiting the Men's Soccer 2018 Schedule online at HornetSports.com.
