MEN'S SOCCER PLAYS TO 1-1 DRAW IN SEASON OPENER AT #22 PORTLAND

PORTLAND, Ore. The Sacramento State men's soccer team opened their season Friday night on the road at the University of Portland. In the end, 110 minutes of play wasn't enough to settle the match as the Hornets and the 22nd ranked Pilots played to a 1-1 draw.

Sacramento State jumped ahead, gaining an early 1-0 advantage in the first minute of play. Dominic Scotti scored the first goal of the season for the Hornets, receiving a perfect pass from Benji Kikanovic. Scotti received the ball just inside the box and punched it in from the right corner for the score.

Scotti had one goal during the preseason against Bethesda. Dating back to last season, the senior midfielder has scored four goals of his last seven games.

Kikanovic notched the first assist of the year for Sacramento State. The freshman exploded onto the scene during the preseason, totaling four goals and three assists in just three halves of play.

Sacramento State's Jack Larter picked up the team's first red card of the season in just the game's fifth minute. Despite playing a man down for 105 minutes the rest of the night, the Hornets held the 22nd-ranked Pilots to just one goal all night.

Portland, ranked #22 in the nation according to Top Drawer Soccer, got the equalizer from Benji Michel, their second-leading point scorer from last season, in the 27th minute.

The rest of the game passed without another score, though both teams had their chances. Sacramento State took two more shots in the second half, including a header by Mac Harrington that forced a nice save by the Portland keeper. Similar, the Pilots took four shots in the second half, two of which were on target and forced saves by Hornets' keeper Nick Kubler. In total, Kubler made five saves on the night, setting a career high.

Overtime saw just one shot, taken by the Pilots, though it missed high. The Hornets were unable to threaten in either of the overtime periods.

Sacramento State will remain in Oregon over the weekend before taking on Oregon State Monday night. The match is scheduled for 7:00 pm. For more information, be sure to visit the 2018 Sacramento State men's soccer schedule online at HornetSports.com.
