SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer program announced their latest offseason signing today as they added Oscar Govea to the 2018 men's soccer roster.
Oscar Govea - 5-7 - MF - Los Banos, Calif./Pacheco High School
Govea is currently a member of Sacramento Republic FC U-18/19 academy team. In September of last year, he was added to the Republic FC's 2017 USL roster on an Academy Player on a Professional Team contract, allowing him to play with the Sacramento Republic FC while maintaining his amateur status.
He was one of two academy players added to the roster and made his debut with Republic FC on Feb. 15 in a friendly match against the Seattle Sounders FC (MLS).
In 25 games this season for the U-18/19 academy team, Govea has made 22 starts and scored six goals.
"Oscar is a dynamic, attacking player," said Sacramento State men's soccer head coach Mike Linenberger. "He can play as a forward, winger, or attacking midfielder."
The 2017-18 season is Govea's third in the academy and second full season with a Republic FC academy team. In 2016-17, he played in 30 games (27 starts) for the Sacramento Republic FC U-15/16, scoring 11 goals. He spent a half season with the U-15/16 squad, scoring four goals in eight games.
"He is a very creative player that can set up scoring chances and also score goals himself," added Linenberger. "We expect him to make an immediate impact as a freshman."
In total, the midfielder has played in 66 games for Republic FC's academy team since 2016 while scoring 22 goals.
