RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's soccer team (6-4-1, 2-0-1) opened a three-game road trip through southern California tonight against UC Riverside (0-10-0, 0-3-0). The trip started on the right foot as the Hornets came from behind to defeat the Highlanders 2-1 for their first ever win at Riverside.
The match started with a quiet first half as both teams traded zeros through the first 45 minutes of play. The second half was another story though, as Riverside opened the scoring almost immediately in the 47th minute. UCR's Robert Garcia-Vargas recovered a loose ball deflected after a corner kick and struck it home from 15 yards out in front of the net.
The Hornets didn't waste any time countering. Less than 10 minutes later, forward Christian Webb found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1. The goal was Webb's team-leading fifth of the season. The assist on the play went to Justin Bedig, who leads the club with five this year.
Sacramento State wasn't done there though, as Trevor Jackson scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute, putting the Hornets up 2-1. Jackson played a beautiful cross from Brad Bumgarner for what was his fourth goal of the season. Bumgarner picked up his fourth assist on the play.
Together, Webb, Jackson, and Bedig are the three leading point scorers for the Hornets. The trio have 10, 9, and 9 points, respectively.
The win in Riverside is Sacramento State's first in program history. The Green and Gold entered tonight's match 0-3-2 all-time at UC Riverside. After tonight, they are now 5-6-3 against the Highlanders.
With the win, the men's team remains unbeaten in conference play, improving to 2-0-1 in Big West play.
Their three-game road trip continues on Sunday as they travel to Cal State Fullerton (6-5-1, 1-2) to take on the Titans on Saturday, October 7 at 7 PM.
