SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It was the tale of two halves Saturday night at Hornet Field as Sacramento State (5-4-1) played host to UC Irvine (5-4-2). Sacramento appeared dominant in the first half before a wild second half led to two overtime periods and ultimately, a 3-3 draw.
The Hornets jumped out early Saturday night, going up 1-0 in just the third minute. Senior midfielder and team leader Paul Geyer connected for his first goal of the season, fielding a clean pass from Brad Bumgarner just in front of the goal. Geyer tapped it in past the diving keeper from six yards.
For Bumgarner, the assist was his third of the year. Forward Justin Bedig was also credited with an assist, his team-leading fourth.
Twenty minutes later, Christian Webb extended Sacramento State's lead to two. Geyer kicked the ball out from the middle of the box to Webb, who was waiting on the edge. He delivered from the edge of the box for his third goal this season.
The match wrapped up for halftime with the Hornets up 2-0 over the Anteaters and looking to be in control. But it was a very different UC Irvine team that took the field at the start of the second period. The scored early into the second half as Giovanni Godoy, the team's leading scorer, scored on a clean header right in front of goal.
The Hornets pushed the lead back to two goals after Matt Carnefix lobbed a pass down the center and Webb broke past the defenders to retrieve it, scoring in a 1-on-1 situation for his second goal of the night and his fourth of the year.
The second half went downhill from there for Sacramento State. Play between the two teams began to escalate physically and the Hornets were tagged with nine fouls, two yellow cards, and a red card all in the second half. The red card came against Geyer after he collided with a UCI player converging on a ball.
UCI scored two more times in the half, with the equalizer coming from Godoy in the 89th minute of regulation to force over time. The overtime periods went by with minimal incident, though the Hornets were tagged for two more yellow cards, bringing their match total to five.
UCI peppered the goal in the second half, taking 15 shots while Sacramento State managed just six. In total, the Anteaters outshot the Hornets 26-16. James Del Curto and the UCI goalkeeper matched numbers, making six saves apiece and each allowing three goals.
The draw is Sacramento State's first this season as their record moves to 5-4-1 (1-0-1). Their next match will take place on Thursday, October 15 as they head to UC Riverside.
