OREM, Utah — Freshman forward Justin Bedig helped lift Sacramento State men's soccer (4-3-0) to a 4-3 win over the Northern Illinois University Huskies (3-4-0) Sunday morning. With the win, Sacramento State has now won three straight matches and clinched the Wolverine Invitational championship.
With the match tied at two in the second half, Bedig scored on a header off of an NIU clearance, putting the Hornets up 3-2 in the 80th minute of play. Just three minutes later, Bedig scored again, taking a cross from Brad Bumgarner and sneaking it past NIU goalkeeper Konrad Dziedzic. The shot was deflected and nearly stopped by Dziedzic, but the ball crawled across the goal line to give Sacramento State a 4-2 lead.
The insurance goal was much needed as NIU scored two minutes later, giving the Huskies their third goal of the morning and cutting the Hornets' lead to one. That was the end of the scoring, however, and Sacramento State held on for the 4-3 win.
Bedig started his day with an assist to teammate Christian Webb, his second assist of the season. Overall, it was a five-point match for the freshman.
Webb's goal came in the 18th minute of play and gave Sacramento State the early 1-0 lead. That lead was doubled in 25th minute when Trevor Jackson drove home a penalty kick for his third goal of the season.
The win also clinched the Wolverine Invitational championship for Sacramento State. Senior midfielder Paul Geyer was named Tournament MVP, playing all 90 minutes in both matches and taking three shots (two on goal). Bedig, Cylus Sandoval, Brad Bumgarner, and Christian Webb were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Sacramento State men's soccer team plays next on Sunday, September 24 at 1:00 pm against Saint Mary's.
