SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Shots and scoring chances were just about even between Sacramento State and CSU Bakersfield on Friday but the Roadrunners capitalized on their opportunities to score a 3-0 win in the first match of the Copa de Causeway at Hornet Field.

In the other opening match of the four-team, two-site weekend tournament UC Davis topped Seattle, 1-0.

"Bakersfield worked a little harder than us and had a little bit more of the ball than us, so I'm disappointed with that but I did felt that chances created were about equal," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "The difference was they were better in front of the goal finishing chances than we were. I thought we missed great opportunities at key moments in the game."

Sacramento State (1-1-0) had a 17-16 overall advantage in shots for the match but CSU Bakersfield (1-1-0) placed seven shots on goal to four for the Hornets. The home team also had a 9-8 advantage in corner kicks and had a late penalty kick that was not converted.

Both teams put pressure on the respective goalkeepers early before the Roadrunners broke through in the 27th minute when redshirt junior Joe Masumiya corralled a loose ball and blasted a shot from the top of the box into the top-right corner to give Bakersfield the lead.

The Hornets had a 2-1 edge in shots through the remainder of the half and were able to fend off two late Roadrunner corner kicks to enter the intermission with just a single goal deficit.

CSU Bakersfield quickly doubled its lead just over five minutes into the second half. A Hornet corner kick was played back up field and found Roadrunner freshman Giovanni Godoy open just past midfield for a breakaway. Godoy would put an open shot past Hornet goalkeeper Cesar Castillo to extend the Bakersfield lead.

Sacramento State put on the pressure in the following minutes and senior Isaac Ikyurav had a pair of quality looks stopped by Bakersfield keeper Anthony Perez. Castillo kept the Hornets within striking distance with some superb stops but the Roadrunners would add a third goal as a cross from Lucas Dall'Orso was deflected in by sophomore Eduardo Caldaza in the 78th minute.

The Hornets had one more good scoring opportunity as Ikyurav was awarded a penalty kick in the 84th minute after a CSUB foul in the box, but his PK try sailed high and the Roadrunners finished off the shutout.

Castillo made four saves to keep the Hornets close while Perez finished with four stops for the clean sheet. Ikyurav led all players with six shots, placing three on goal.

The Copa de Causeway will conclude on Sunday when UC Davis hosts CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State faces Seattle at 1 p.m. at Hornet Field. The match will open a double-header with the Hornet women's soccer team and be Sport Chalet Kids Day with free youth admission with a voucher and a free post-match autograph session.
