IRVINE, Calif. – Sacramento State senior forward Isaac Ikyurav has been named to the 2013 Big West Preseason all-Conference Team announced Thursday. The Hornets were also picked to finish fourth in the North Division in the Big West Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll.
Ikyurav is coming off an all-Big West second team selection in 2012 after he led the Hornets with five goals, four assists and 14 points. He tied for eighth in the Big West in points last season and tied for the team lead with two game-winning goals while starting 15 of 18 games.
The Benue, Nigeria native has tallied eight goals through his first two seasons with the Hornets after transferring from American University in Nigeria. He has had a pair of two-goal games, including one last season against UNLV, and is one of three returning starters this season for Sacramento State along with fellow seniors Gabe Silveira and Almog Strikowski.
Ikyurav and the Hornets garnered 11 points in the preseason poll to place fourth in the North Division. UC Santa Barbara was picked to win the division with 25 points, earning five first-place votes and finishing just ahead of UC Davis and Cal Poly. Defending conference champion Cal State Northridge was picked first in the South Division and had the most total points (30) and first-place votes (six) among the eight conference teams.
Sacramento State is coming off an 8-8-2 season in which it went 5-4-1 to place third in the North Division in its first season in the Big West Conference. The squad lost eight starters from 2012 and returns just nine players who have seen previous game action for the team. Two returning redshirts and 14 newcomers have joined the 2013 roster, which will host Stanford at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in its first of two exhibition games.
