SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team will play host to San Diego and No. 18 ranked Saint Mary's this weekend in the Hornets' first home games of the 2012 season.

The Hornets (0-1) will face the Toreros (0-1) at 5 p.m. on Friday before meeting the nationally ranked Gaels (1-0) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Sacramento State lost its season opener, 4-0, at Oregon State last weekend. The Beavers scored their first goal just nine seconds before halftime and tacked on three more in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Senior forward Max Alvarez led the Hornets with four shots (three on goal) while junior keeper Cesar Castillo started in net and took the loss. In preseason action, the Hornets lost 3-0 at Stanford before defeating Cal, 1-0.

San Diego lost its season opener as well, by a 2-0 score to Big West Conference member UC Irvine. UC Irvine used two second half goals to put away the game. USD's Patrick Wallen took a game-high six shots (two on goal) while keeper Michael D'Arrigo played all 90 minutes and made three saves.

Saint Mary's is ranked No. 18 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) top-25 poll. They were ranked No. 18 in the preseason poll and after a 2-1 home victory over UNLV, retained their spot. Against the Rebels, Trevor Newquist and Ismail Adam each scored for the Gaels. Saint Mary's scored each in the first half against UNLV and tacked on another goal in the 63rd minute. UNLV scored in the 69th minute but couldn't finish the rally. The Gaels had two more shot attempts (11) than the Rebels, but had one fewer (4) shot on goal.

Sacramento State is 3-8 versus top-25 ranked teams in the last three seasons. The Hornets' last match against a nationally ranked team was a 2-0 loss in 2011 at No. 2 ranked New Mexico. Their last home game against a top-25 team was a 3-0 loss to No. 25 ranked Cal State Bakersfield, also in 2011. Sacramento State's last victory over a nationally ranked side was a 1-0 overtime win at Loyola Marymount to open the 2011 campaign.

The last meeting Sacramento State and San Diego met was in 1999 and the Toreros won their home game, 4-2. 

Last season Sacramento State and Saint Mary's played to a 1-1 draw in Moraga, Calif. Then-senior Chris Bettencourt scored in the first half for the Hornets but the Gaels' senior Justin Grider scored with two minutes left in regulation to force overtime.

Sacramento State is 1-2 all-time against San Diego in its Div. I era. The two teams first met in 1994, which the Hornets winning 3-1, but the Toreros won the next two games in 1997 and 1999.

Sacramento State and Saint Mary's have met nearly every season since the Hornets moved to Div. I in 1991. In that first season, the Hornets started a three match winning streak but the Gaels have owned the series since, winning 10 of the 16 matches since. Overall, the Hornets hold a 5-10-4 record against the Gaels. In recent history, Sacramento State has not lost in its last three matches with Saint Mary's (1-0-2).
