WILLIAMS LEADS THE WAY FOR MEN'S GOLF IN FINAL ROUND OF SACRAMENTO STATE INVITATIONAL
Ryan Williams shot 70 during the final round and finished in 11th place.
ELK GROVE, Calif. — Senior Ryan Williams and junior Jordan Weir each shot under par to pace Sacramento State during the final round of the Sacramento State Invitational presented by The Old Spaghetti Factory on Tuesday at Valley Hi Country Club.
Williams posted a 2-under par round of 70 and finished in 11th place while Weir recorded his second straight 71 to tie for 17th. As a team, the Hornets placed seventh with a three-round total of 299-285-289-873. That score placed them just four strokes out of fourth place.
UC Santa Barbara rallied on the back nine of the final round to win the team title. The Gauchos shot 282-290-281-853 to win by eight strokes over Cal State Fullerton. Glen Scher of UCSB was the medalist after shooting 67-70-71-208. Scher needed a bogey putt on No. 18 to stay out of a playoff with USC Upstate's Adam Goins.
Williams played the front nine and back nine at 1-under. He had three birdies on the front to go along with two bogeys. On the back he birdied Nos. 10 and 16 before bogeying the par-4 17th.
Weir was even through nine holes with a birdie on the par-4 second accompanying a bogey on the par-3 fifth. He also birdied No. 10 before bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15 moved him to 1-over. A par on No. 17 proceeded birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to take him back into the red.
Freshman Aaron Beverly tied for 24th place in the tournament with rounds of 74-72-73-219. Beverly was 2-over at the turn on Tuesday with seven pars and two bogeys before evening out his round with birdies on the par-4 11th and par-5 13th. He remained there until a bogey on the par-4 17th took him to 1-over.
Sophomore Owen Taylor provided the final score towards the team total with a 3-over par 75. Taylor had two bogeys on the front side but also eagled the par-5 eighth. He began the back with a bogey and, after a par, double-bogeyed the par-4 12th. A birdie on No. 14 earned him a stroke back but was trailed by a bogey on No. 16.
After a week off, the Hornets will return to action at the Anteater Invitational hosted by UC Irvine on March 25-26 at El Niguel Country Club.
