4/22/2012
Jordan Weir (69) was one of three Hornets to shoot under par in the third round of the Winchester Classic.
MEADOW VISTA, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team led all teams with a third round score of 288 to finish the Winchester Classic in second place on Sunday at Winchester Golf Course.
The Hornets relied on a 3-under 69 from Jordan Weir and 1-under 71s from Grant Rappleye and Jake Johnson to shoot even par as a team in the final round. The score left the Hornets at 292-307-288-887 and drew the team even with Idaho and UC Davis for second place in the tournament. Fresno State maintained its lead to win the team title with a total of 874.
Grant Rappleye ended the tournament with the best overall finish on the team. Rappleye shot 71-78-71-220 to tie for eighth place. Weir tied for 10th place with a 54-hole total of 75-77-69-221. His final round score is tied for the second best of his career and equals his season low.
Cameron Rappleye contributed the final counting score on Sunday and tied for 16th place at 70-76-77-223. Jake Johnson overcame a slow start to the tourney by posting a 71 in the third round. Johnson tied for 28th at 77-82-71-230. Ryan Williams rounded out the lineup by placing 31st with a total of 76-76-80-232.
Sacramento State was also represented by three individuals in the tournament. Eric Taylor tied for 10th and set his 54-hole career best in the process. Taylor shot 76-74-72-222. The second round 74 and his final round were his two career lows. His brother, Owen, tied for 19th place with rounds of 73-75-77-225. Jordan Swanson tied for 42nd at 81-87-82-250.
The tie with UC Davis allows Sacramento State to have a chance to win the 2011-12 Causeway Cup. The Aggies stormed out to a 45-15 lead in the annual battle between the schools but Sacramento State has not lost to UCD since the Dec. 19 women's basketball game. The two schools will split the five available men's golf points and head into Friday night's track meet with UC Davis leading, 47.5-42.5. Five points will be up for grabs in both men's and women's track and field.
The men's golf team will next compete at the America Sky Championships in North Stonington, Conn., beginning on April 29. The tournament will have added stakes this season as the conference champion will receive an automatic berth to an NCAA Regional for the first time.
