CAMERON RAPPLEYE AND MEN'S GOLF ARE VICTORIOUS AT WILDCAT INVITATIONAL

10/11/2011

LAYTON, Utah —
Cameron Rappleye held on to his first day lead to earn his first collegiate title and the Sacramento State men's golf team withstood a furious charge for Arkansas-Little Rock to win the team title on Tuesday at the Wildcat Invitational.

The victories mark the second consecutive season the Hornets have left the Valley View Golf Club with both titles. Last season, the team set the school 54-hole record en route to the team title and Jake Johnson was the medalist.

The Hornets built a 15-stroke team lead following the first two rounds on Monday but shot 296 (8-over) as a team on Tuesday and finished tied with UALR with a three-round total of 868. Despite the Trojans' making up 16 strokes in the final round, the Hornets won the team title based on its fifth score.

Cameron Rappleye shot 68-69-75-212 and finished one stroke ahead of Tyler Sluman of Rollins in the individual standings. The 54-hole total of 212 was a career best for the Sacramento native and is tied for ninth in school history. Rappleye's opening round 68 also matched his career low.

On Tuesday, Jordan Weir and Grant Rappleye each shot 73 and both finished with a total of 218 to tie for 12th. Jake Johnson and Owen Taylor added rounds of 75. Johnson shot 73-72-75-220 to tie for 16th. Taylor tied for 32nd with a total of 272.

Rollins and Southern Utah tied for third in the team standings at 878. Boise State completed the top five after shooting 882.

Sacramento State will close out the fall portion of its schedule at the Bill Cullum Invitational on Oct. 17-18 in Simi Valley, Calif.
