MEN'S GOLF FINISHES FIFTH AT HARTFORD HAWKS INVITATIONAL

SOUTH KENT, Conn. — The Sacramento State men's golf team relied on low rounds from Jake Johnson and Owen Taylor to finish fifth in the Hartford Hawks Invitational on Tuesday at Bulls Ridge Golf Club.
The Hornets completed the second round, which was suspended due to darkness on Monday, with a total of 303. The team then added a 292 in the third round and finished with a three-round total of 889.
Connecticut won the event with a late surge in the third round. The Huskies shot 294-286-288-868 and finished eight strokes ahead of Loyola (Md.). St. John's, which led after the first round, finished third (877) and host Hartford was fourth (884).
Johnson led Sacramento State in the second round with a 2-over 74. The senior was trailed by Grant Rappleye (75), Cameron Rappleye (77) and Owen Taylor (77).
In the third round, Taylor carded a 2-under 70 to lead the way for the Hornets who finished the round at 4-over. Grant Rappleye was also in the red at 71. Jordan Weir carded a 75 and Johnson shot 76 to count toward the team total.
Overall, Grant Rappleye had the highest individual finish, tying for 11th at 72-75-71-218. Johnson tied for 24th after shooting 74-74-76-224. Cameron Rappleye posted the best single round on the team (69 in the first) but tied for 27th with a 54-hole total of 225. Taylor overcame a rough start to shoot 82-77-70-229 and tied for 42nd. Weir completed the lineup by tying for 53rd at 79-78-75-232.
UConn's Jeb Buchanan was the medalist after defeating Loyola's Jay Mulieri, Rhode Island's Branden Chicorka and Sacred Heart's Josh Salah in a playoff. All four golfers totaled 213.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Wolfpack Classic at Edgewood Golf Club beginning on Oct. 3.
