MEN'S GOLF USES RECORD-LOW ROUND TO TIE FOR FIRST; JOHNSON IS MEDALIST

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. —
The Sacramento State men's golf team used a record-low round of 277 to vault up the standings and finish tied for first place at the the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Challenge on Friday at the Cypress Ridge Golf Club.

The Hornets, who were 14 strokes behind Cal Poly following the first round, broke the school record by two strokes and finished even with the Mustangs with a two-day total of 583. The previous school record of 279 came in the third round of the Purple & Red Invitational on Oct. 11, 2010.

With the two teams tied following the conclusion of the second round, both squads returned to the 18th hole for a playoff. Cal Poly finished the hole at 4-under while the Hornets were 3-under. The Mustangs' were aided by an eagle from Pace Johnson to help win the tie-breaker.

Helping the Sacramento State cause was junior Jake Johnson who was the medalist after shooting 73-66-139. Johnson's final round score, which consisted of seven birdies, 10 pars and one bogey, was the second best of his career and placed him sixth in school history. Johnson also led the tournament on par-3 scoring, finishing at minus-1. He also tied for the best score on par 4s at minus-3.

Grant Rappleye and Jordan Weir also finished in the top 10. Rappleye carded rounds of 74-72-146 to place eighth. Weir shot 79-69-148 to finish ninth.

Cameron Rappleye provided the third-lowest score on the team on Friday with a second-round 70. Rappleye finished 12th at 80-70-150 and rebounded from a rough start in the second round which saw him bogey his first three holes. From that point, Rappleye had five birdies and 10 pars.

Jake Pineo completed the lineup with rounds of 85-77-162 to tie for 30th.

The Hornets will quickly return to action at the OGIO Invitational hosted by UC Santa Barbara beginning on Monday.
