3/8/2011
FRESNO, Calif. — Led by Jordan Weir's round of 73, the Sacramento State men's golf team finished the Fresno State Lexus Classic in 13th place on Tuesday at Sunnyside Country Club.
Weir was one of three Hornets to fire 75 or better, and helped the team to a third-round total of 376. That mark beat the team's first two scores by at least six strokes.
Sacramento State finished with a total of 382-384-376-1,142. The tournament was won by seventh-ranked San Diego State which shot 366-355-362-1083
Weir opened his round by bogeying two of his first three holes and made the turn at 3-over without a birdie. Another bogey on the par-4 first led to a run in which he carded four birdies, three pars and his bogey over his final eight holes.
Cameron Rappleye and Jake Johnson each shot 75 on Tuesday. Rappleye ended the tournament tied for 23rd at 74-7375-222 which led the team. His final round consisted of two birdies, 11 pars and five bogeys.
Johnson recorded his second consecutive round of 75 and tied for 58th place. He stood at 4-over through his first four holes but then birdied the par-4 14th and 16th. On the front nine, he had one birdie and two bogeys to go along with six pars.
Jake Pineo and Kyle Candlish also contributed to the team score. Pineo finished at 76-80-76-232 to tie for 64th place while Candlish had his best round of the tournament with a 77. Pineo overcame a rough start, which put him at 3-over through four holes to card a birdie, 11 pars and two bogeys over his final 14 holes.
Candlish's round consisted of two birdies, nine pars and seven bogeys. The senior ended the tournament at 90-83-77-250 to place 99th.
Grant Rappleye rounded out the team with a round of 81 to drop him into a tie for 54th. Rappleye shot 69-79-81-229 for the event.
The men will next compete at the Cal Poly Lampkin Grip Match Play on March 24-25. Last season, the Hornets defeated Fresno State in the finals to win the championship.
