MEN'S GOLF AND JOHNSON WIN TITLES AT PURPLE & RED INVITATIONAL

10/12/2010

LAYTON, Utah — A record-setting day by the Sacramento State men's golf team helped the Hornets win the team title at the Purple & Red Invitational, Tuesday afternoon at the Valley View Golf Club.

Sacramento State rallied from a 10-stroke deficit heading into the final round to win the event by one stroke over Washington State. The Hornets shot 290-279-288-857 to set the school 54-hole record by three strokes.

Individually, Jake Johnson pulled away from the field to become the medalist. The junior, shot 70-65-69-204 and finished five strokes ahead of teammate Grant Rappleye. Johnson's 54-hole total broke the school record of 209 which he shared with Grant Norton. Johnson also became the first Hornet to win a tournament since Scott DeBorba finished first at the Cal Poly Men's Invitational in March of 2009.

"It was an amazing day," Director of Golf David Sutherland said. "We received incredible play from Jake and Grant and solid enough play from everyone else. It just shows you that you are never out of it."

Johnson's play continues a hot run in which the junior is averaging 70.88 in eight rounds this season. Among those rounds are six scores of at least 72 or better, including three in three in the 60s.

"Jake is really driving it well," Sutherland said. "He's so long and straight off the tee it allows him to have a birdie putt on almost every hole."

Rappleye's 54-hole total of 70-69-70-209 moved him into a tie for second in school history and gave him his highest finish as a Hornet. The junior is now averaging 71.25 in eight rounds this season.

In Tuesday's final round, the team also counted a 74 from Jordan Weir, and a 75 from Cameron Rappleye. Cameron finished the event tied for 31st at 74-71-75. Jake Pineo tied for 65th with scores of 76-75-76-227 and Weir tied for 72nd at 81-74-74.

Sacramento State was followed in the top five by Washington State (858), Portland (859), Weber State (860) and Boise State (868).

The team will next compete at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif., beginning on Oct. 25.
