RENO, Nev. — Senior Scott DeBorba recorded his best round of the Wolf Pack Classic on Tuesday, shooting 75 to lead the Sacramento State men’s golf team in the final round of the event. The Hornets finished the 54-hole tournament at 290-284-306-880 to place ninth among the 13-team field.
New Mexico State, which entered the final round tied with Tennessee for first place, pulled away to win the team title by five strokes at 290-278-279-847. The Aggies were followed by Arizona (852), Tennessee (857), Nevada (863) and Kansas State (863) in the top five.
Wichita State’s Dustin Garza retained his individual lead to become the medalist. Garza, who won for the second time this season in four events, shot 67-65-73-205 and was three strokes ahead of both NMSU’s Kevin Lozares and UTEP’s Roger Sloan.
The Hornets entered the round in sixth place and hoped to crack the top five during the final 18 holes. However, the team struggled throughout the round and was forced to count four scores ranging from 75 to 78. DeBorba, who one week ago led the team to the America Sky Conference title, carded the low round and finished tied for 55th overall at 76-77-75-228.
Senior Cody Miller had the best overall finish, tying for 26th at 70-70-78-218. Junior Grant Norton tied for 34th overall with scores of 71-72-76-219 and freshman Jake Johnson tied for 42nd at 73-72-77-222. Freshman Cameron Rappleye tied DeBorba for 55th with a total of 80-70-78-228.
The Hornets will next compete at the Santa Clara Invitational beginning on Oct. 20.
