DeBORBA, NORTON LEAD MEN'S GOLF TO AMERICA SKY CHAMPIONSHIP

9/30/2008

FALMOUTH, Mass. — For the second time in the last three years, the Sacramento State men’s golf team has captured the America Sky Conference title. The Hornets shot 296-293-589 to win the event Tuesday at the Hawks Invitational/America Sky Championship at the Ballymeade Country Club.

Senior Scott DeBorba and junior Grant Norton each earned all-conference honors after placing in the top five among America Sky golfers. DeBorba posted a pair of 71s to tie for sixth overall and was second among conference foes. Norton rallied from a 76 on Monday with a 69 in the final round to tie for 14th overall and place third in the America Sky standings.

“It’s exciting to win a conference championship for the school,” Director of Golf David Sutherland said. “To be honest, we played better than our score indicated but hopefully this is the start of something special."

“I’m really happy to see the way Scott played. As a senior, he stepped up and led the team. Grant’s round on Tuesday may have been the best round he’s ever played.”

In the overall standings, the Hornets finished fifth, 23 strokes behind Baylor who claimed the team title at 284-282-566. North Carolina State (293-283-576), Georgia State (298-283-581) and TCU (292-292-584) finished second through fourth, respectively.

Sacramento State finished 19 strokes ahead of Hartford for the America Sky title. The Hawks shot 303-305-608 and were led by Brian Albertazzi’s 72-69-141 to become the conference’s medalist. Northern Colorado placed third in the conference standings at 316-293-609.

Along with DeBorba and Norton, Sacramento State was also represented by Cameron RappleyeCody Miller and Grant Rappleye. Cameron shot 76-75-151 to tie for 49th. Miller fired 75-78-153 to tie for 57th and Grant tied for 76th at 74-82-156.
