SOLVANG, Calif. — Led by a third-round 71 from Cody Miller the Sacramento State men’s golf team concluded play at the OGIO Pacific Coast Intercollegiate with its fourth-best score in school history on Tuesday. The Hornets ended the 54-hole event with a total of 871. That score matches the showing at the 1996 Santa Clara Invitational and is the lowest by Sacramento State since an 868 at the 1997 Pacific Invitational.
Harris had the lowest total on the team, and the fifth-lowest in school history, after shooting 69-71-73-213. The sophomore had the lowest rounds on the team during the opening two rounds but trailed Miller on Tuesday. Freshman Grant Norton ranked second on the team with rounds of 70-73-73-216 to finish one stroke ahead of Miller.
Scott DeBorba shot 76-75-75-225 and Kyle Candlish fired 76-76-78-230 to complete the lineup for Sacramento State.
Cal Poly rallied for the team title during the final round. The Mustangs trailed Denver entering Tuesday but shot 277 as a team to finish at 827. Denver was second at 832 while UC Irvine, Oregon State and San Diego finished third through fifth, respectively.
Chris Kirk of Cal Poly led from the start to become the medalist. After opening with an 8-under 64 on Monday, Kirk followed with rounds of 67 and 68. His total of 199 was four strokes ahead of Idaho’s Russell Grove, who was second.
Sacramento State will close out its spring season at the Independent Golf Championships in Greeley, Colo., beginning on April 27.
