MEN'S GOLF WINS DIV. I INDEPENDENT TITLE; NORTON SET SCHOOL RECORD
4/29/2007
WINDSOR, Colo. — The Sacramento State men’s golf team captured its first Div. I Independent Golf Championship title on Sunday and rewrote the school record book in the process. The Hornets concluded play with a team score of 863 to finish 11 strokes ahead of second-place Utah Valley State.
That team score is the second lowest in school history for 54 holes, trailing only the 860 posted at the 1996 Big Sky Championships. Freshman Grant Norton finished second overall also broke the school record with a three-round total of 209. After carding rounds of 68 and 72, Norton recorded a 69 on Sunday. His score is two strokes better than the previous record which was held by Robert Hamilton and current head coach Adam Pohll.
Sacramento State led after each of the first two rounds. The Hornets added to their six-stroke lead on Sunday to pull away. The title was the second tournament championship for the men this season and a cap a great month of April which also saw the women win the Big Sky Conference title.
Jeremy Harris (70-73-75) and Scott DeBorba (76-70-72) tied for ninth place with a three-round total of 218. Cody Miller shot 71-72-79-222 to tie for 17th and Kyle Candlish recorded scores of 74-75-76-226 to tie for 29th.
Host Northern Colorado finished one stroke behind Utah Valley State to finish in the third place out of six teams. South Dakota State and North Dakota State tied for fourth, Weber State was sixth and Idaho State took seventh.
