WEIR AND MEN'S GOLF BOTH IN FIRST PLACE AFTER FIRST ROUND OF AMERICA SKY CHAMPIONSHIP
5/2/2011
Freshman Jordan Weir carded a career-best round of 68 at the America Sky Championship.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Freshman Jordan Weir shot a career best 68 and is in the lead following the first round of the America Sky Conference Golf Championship, Monday at Troon North Golf Club. Weir's score also propelled the Hornets to a four-shot lead with two rounds remaining.
The Oak Ridge High School product holds a one stroke lead over Northern Colorado's Steve Bidne. Hartford's DJ Lantz shot 70 and was the only other player to break par (71). Weir's 3-under total matches his season best compared to par. He previously shot a 3-under 69 at the Cal Poly Lamkin Grip Challenge. Weir had a chance at a historic round, standing a 5-under with three holes remaining, but bogeyed two of his final three holes.
Sacramento State was also aided by a 74 from Cameron Rappleye and a 75 from Ryan Williams. The team also counted a round of 79 from Jake Johnson. Grant Rappleye shot 80.
"We started out rough and it was really windy through the first seven holes," Sacramento State men's head coach Chris Hall said. "Jordan played phenomenal under some tough conditions."
In the team standings, the Hornets are followed by Weber State (300), Northern Colorado (301), South Dakota (305) and Utah Valley (305) in the top five. The 12-team tournament continues with the second round on Tuesday. The final round will take place on Wednesday morning.
Sacramento State is in search of its second team title in the last three seasons. The team finished first in 2008-09 before placing third a year ago.
