JOHNSON, RAPPLEYE LEAD SACRAMENTO STATE IN OPENING DAY OF SPRING SEASON

2/7/2011

Jake Johnson and Cameron Rappleye are both four strokes off the lead after the first two rounds

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. —
Sacramento State's Cameron Rappleye and Jake Johnson are tied for fourth place following the first two rounds of Anteater Invitational on Monday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Rappleye led the team in the first round with an even-par 72 before carding a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. Johnson recorded a 73 in the morning round and followed with a 69 in the second round. That score was the second-best of the round, trailing only Cal State Northridge's Nick Delio's 67.

Heading into the final round on Tuesday, Sacramento State is in fourth place with a team score of 294-295-589. Arizona holds the team lead at 285-292-577. The Wildcats are followed by UC Irvine (292-293-585) and Santa Clara (294-292-586) in the top three.

While the Hornets are 12 strokes behind UofA for the top spot, the team could've been all alone in the second place if it wasn't for a technicality. Following the second round, Jordan Weir was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard meaning his round of 75 was eliminated from the team total and forcing the team to count an 82. Unlike, professional golf, Weir will return for the third round on Tuesday and be eligible to count toward the team total. Healso shot 76 in the first round.

Grant Rappleye shot 73-74-147 and is tied for 17th. Jake Pineo completed the lineup at 82-82-164 and is alone in 61st.

Delio holds the individual lead following 36 holes with a total of 71-67-138. He is three strokes ahead of Santa Clara's Scott Travers and Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez.
