JOHNSON HOLDS INDIVIDUAL LEAD BEHIND SECOND ROUND 65

LAYTON, Utah — Sacramento State junior Jake Johnson used a career-best 65 in the second round to take the individual lead after the first day of the Purple & Red Invitational on Monday at the Valley View Golf Club.
Johnson shot 70-65-135 in the first 36 holes and holds a three-stroke edge of Portland's Jarrett Foote, Utah State's Tyson McFarland and Washington State's Kyle Hurt.
As a team, the Hornets were tied for sixth place after the morning round with a score of 290. The team jumped into third place at the end of the day after recording a team total of 279. That mark was just one stroke off the total for Portland for the low of the day.
Grant Rappleye joins Johnson in the top five (tied for fifth) with rounds of 70-69-139. Cameron Rappleye is tied for 29th overall after carding 74-71-145.
Jake Pineo shot 76-75-151 and is tied for 62nd while Jordan Weir recorded rounds of 81-74-155 to tie for 80th.
Washington State holds the team lead with a total of 280-279-559. Portland Is second at 289-278-567. Co-host Weber State (287-287-574) and Boise State (291-285-576) complete the top five.
