AMERICA SKY NAMES SUTHERLAND COACH OF THE YEAR, RAPPLEYE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Sacramento State director of golf David Sutherland was named the America Sky Coach of the Year and sophomore Grant Rappleye was one of the conference's tri-Players of the Year, it was announced today.
The pair were two of the five Hornets honored by the conference. Senior Kyle Candlish and sophomore Jake Johnson joined Rappleye on the first team. The America Sky used a combination of rankings from Golfstat and Golf Week to determine the first and second teams.
Rappleye led the conference with a scoring average of 73.48 and had three top 10 finishes in 2009-10. The Sacramento native was also one of the most consistent golfers in the America Sky as 22 of his 27 rounds were 75 or better. Rappleye shot 69-71-71-211 at the Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational to rank third in school history. His best finishwa came at the Paulous Cougar Invitational and the Braveheart Classic where he was sixth.
Rappleye shared the Player of the Year award with Northern Colorado's Steve Bidne and Binghamton's Jake Katz.
Candlish and Johnson were also among the five-member first team. Candlish averaged 73.79 in 24 rounds and had 11 rounds of 72 or lower. He shot 70 in the second and third rounds of the UC Irvine Invitational for his best scores during the year.
Johnson ranked third on the team with a scoring average of 73.85. He was one of only two Hornets to play in each tournament during the year. During the fall, he tied the Sacramento State 54-hole record by shooting 67-69-73-209 at the Purple & Red Invitational. His opening round 67 is tied for the fourth best in the Hornet record book. He also placed second in that event for his top finish.
