MEN'S GOLF IN FIFTH PLACE AFTER FIRST TWO ROUNDS OF AMERICA SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS

EDINBURG, Texas — Last season, the Sacramento State men's golf team ran away from the field to capture the 2009 America Sky Conference title. If the team has any hopes of repeating, it will need an amazing final round after the Hornets recorded scores of 316 and 315 during on Friday and is tied for fifth.

With 36 holes in the book, the America Sky Championships will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday at the Los Lagos Golf Club.

Sacramento State fell behind early in the first round and was never able to recover on Monday. Nick Neal was the lone bright spot for the team in the morning as the senior carded a 72 and stood in third place. The team also counted an 80 from Cameron Rappleye, an 81 from Grant Rappleye and an 83 from Jake Johnson.

In the afternoon, Jake Pineo led the way with a 76 and is tied for 24th place with a total of 85-76-161. Johnson (77), Cameron Rappleye (79) and Grant Rappleye (83) also contributed to the total.

Overall, Neal is tied for 11th at 72-84-156. Cameron Rappleye is tied for 16th (80-79-159), Jake Johnson is tied for 21st (85-76-161) and Grant Rappleye is tied for 34th (81-83-164).

The Hornets are 21 strokes behind host Texas Pan American which shot 299-311-610. Houston Baptist is second at 307-304-611 while Northern Colorado (300-318-618) and Binghamton (318-311-629) are third and fourth, respectively.

Brandon Reyna of UTPA holds the individual lead with rounds of 67-74-141.
