MEN'S GOLF WINS MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP WITH VICTORY OVER FRESNO STATE
3/26/2010
ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — Hours after securing Sacramento State's entry into the title match of the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Match Play Invitational, Nick Neal repeated his performance to lift the Hornets to the championship. Neal dropped a birdie putt on the 18th hole to give Sacramento State three singles victories over Fresno State at the Cypress Ridge Golf Club.
The Hornets took an early lead with an easy 4&3 win from Cameron Rappleye, who improved to 3-0 during the two-day event. Jake Pineo also added a 2&1 victory.
With the match tied 2-2, Neal entered the 18th hole with a 1-up lead. His tee shot of the par-5 landed into the trap and he was forced to layup on his second shot while his opponent placed the ball on the back ridge of the green. Neal answered with a great shot that landed just over 10 feet from the pin. After a miss from the Fresno State golfer on a long putt, Neal secured the 1-up win by making his attempt.
