NEAL, CANDLISH LEAD MEN'S GOLF IN FIRST DAY OF ANTEATER INVITATIONAL

 COSTA MESA, Calif. — Kyle Candlish and Nick Neal each finished the first day at 1-over to tie for the Sacramento State lead after the opening two rounds of the Anteater Invitational. As a team, the Hornets shot 299-288-587 and are in seventh place. The 54-hole tournament concludes on Tuesday at the Mesa Verde Country Club.
Santa Clara holds the team lead at 278-276-554. The Broncos are followed in the top five by Cal State Northridge (567), UC Irvine (568), UC Santa Barbara (572) and Saint Mary's (579).
Individually, UCI's John Chin shot 66-65-131 and is 11-under through 36 holes. Nick Delio of Cal State Northridge is five shots back in second place with rounds of 69 and 67.
The Hornets were led in the morning round by Neal who fired a round of 73. The senior lowered his score in the afternoon with an even-par 72 and is tied for 20th. Candlish shot 75 to open the tournament but recorded a team-best 70 later in the day to match Neal's total.
Sophomore Jake Johnson is tied for 26th overall after shooting 74-72-146. Jake Pineo is six strokes behind Johnson at 77-75-152. Grant Rappleye completed the Hornet lineup at 80-74-154 and is tied for 52nd.
