GRANT RAPPLEYE SHOOTS 68 TO LEAD MEN'S GOLF IN FINAL ROUND OF PACIFIC INVITATIONAL

STOCKON, Calif. — Grant Rappleye recorded a personal best 68 and finished tied for 20th at the Pacific Invitational on Wednesday at Brookside Golf Club.
Sacramento State finished 11th in the field with a three-round total of 871. The Hornets shot 288-286-297-871 and finished 39 strokes behind UC Davis which won the team title at 832. BYU moved into second play with a third-round best 275 and finished at 833. Oregon was third at 834 while Fresno State (842) and Kansas State (843) completed the top five.
Rappleye opened his day with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. Following two pars, he then birdied the par-3 14th, parred the par-4 15th and birdied the par-5 16th to move to 4-under through seven holes. A par of 17 preceded a bogey on the par-5 18th to place him 3-under at the turn. The sophomore posted two pars and then returned to 4-under with a birdie on the par-3 3rd. He gave two of those strokes back with consecutive bogeys on four and five but birdied the par-4 6th and then parred the final three holes.
Cameron Rappleye had the next best score on the team with a round of 74 and tied for 30th overall at 71-71-74-216. Rappleye played his first nine holes at 1-under with two birdies, six pars and a bogey. A pair of bogeys on the front side moved him to 1-over after five holes and he stayed there until a double-bogey on the par-4 9th.
Kyle Candlish placed 46th with scores of 73-71-78-222. On Wednesday, Candlish was 2-over through nine but played his next five holes at 5-over. Jake Johnson was one spot back with a tie for 47th. Johnson shot 73-73-77-223. His score on Wednesday was his first this season above 74.
Tyler Raber of UC Davis was the medalist. Raber shot 64-63-72-199 and was four shots better than Oregon's Eugene Wong.
The tournament was the final event for Sacramento State during the fall season. The team returns to action on Feb. 1 at the UC Irvine Invitational.
