JOHNSON LEADS MEN'S GOLF IN FIRST TWO ROUNDS OF NEVADA TOURNAMENT

RENO, Nev. — Sacramento State sophomore Jake Johnson continued his hot play with rounds of 70 and 72 in the first round of the Wolf Pack Classic, Monday at Wolf Run Golf Club. Johnson is tied for eighth place overall with a 36-hole total of 142.

As a team, the Hornets are tied for eighth place with a first-day score of 583. Wichita State and host Nevada are tied for the team lead at 567. Fresno State is one stroke back in third while Kansas State and San Diego are tied for fourth at 574.

Johnson posted the lowest score for Sacramento State in both rounds. The Cameron Park, Calif., native was tied for sixth place after the opening 18 holes with a 2-under round of 70. Kyle Candlish carded a round of 72 for the second best score for the Hornets in the opening round and the team also counted scores from Nick Neal (74) and Grant Rappleye (76).

In the afternoon, Johnson's 72 was matched by Grant and Cameron Rappleye. Neal also contributed a round of 75 to help the team post a round of 291.

Johnson's total of 142 places him eight strokes behind defending champion Dustin Garza for the individual lead. Johnson was one of 14 golfers to finish the first day under par.

Grant Rappleye is tied for 36th place at 76-72-148. Candlish shot 72-77-149 and is tied for 43rd along with Neal (74-75-149). Caemeron Rappleye is two strokes behind the pair at 79-72-151 and is tied for 58th.

The tournament concludes with a single round on Tuesday.
