JOHNSON TIES MEN'S GOLF 54-HOLE RECORD, FINISHES SECOND OVERALL

9/29/2009

LAYTON, Utah — Sophomore Jake Johnson shot a final round 73 to finish second at the Purple & Red Invitational on Tuesday at the Valley View Golf Club. Johnson shot 67-69-73-209 in his three rounds to tie Grant Norton for the lowest 54-hole total in school history.

As a team, Sacramento State finished in sixth place. The Hornets shot 294 during the final round and were just one of five teams to break 300 during the day. Utah, which co-hosted the tournament with Weber State, defeated Arkansas-Little Rock in a playoff to win the team title. The Utes and UALR each had a total of 867. However, Utah shot 285 over the final 18 holes to rally back from a 20-stroke deficit following the first day. Weber State was third at 868 while Cal State Bakersfield and Utah State tied for fourth at 874.

Many teams that struggled through the first two rounds on Monday were able to make significant moves up the leaderboard on Tuesday. One factor for the run, was that the weather was relatively calm in the morning before winds began gusting as the first day leaders began play later in the day.

Sacramento State counted four scores of 75 or better on Tuesday. Kyle Candlish led the way with a final round of 72. Candlish tied for 17th overall at 75-71-72-218. Nick Neal tied for 28th place with rounds of 73-75-74-222 and Grant Rappleye was tied for 50th at 78-75-75-228. Jake Pineo completed the group by finishing 63rd with rounds of 77-74-85-236.

Cal Sate Bakersfield Levi Garcia shot a tournament-low 64 in the final round to top Johnson for the medalist honor. Garcia was tied for 14th after the first two rounds with scores of 71-72.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev., beginning on Monday, Oct. 5.
