DeBORBA WINS CAL POLY MEN'S INTERCOLLEGIATE IN PLAYOFF

3/27/2009

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — Sacramento State senior Scott DeBorba birdied the par-5 18th hole to win a playoff and become the medalist of the Cal Poly Men’s Intercollegiate on Tuesday. As a team, the Hornets tied for third.

DeBorba entered the final round with the lead after shooting 72 and 65 on Monday. The senior carded a 1-over round of 73 and found himself tied with Cal Poly’s Geoff Gonzalez and Utah Valley’s Nick Nelson at the end of Tuesday’s round with a total of 210. All three players returned to the 18th hole where DeBorba was able to win the playoff.

“It was a great few days for Scott,” Sacramento State director of golf David Sutherland said. “He hit an outstanding second shot and nearly made an eagle with a solid putt. He is playing really well over the past few tournaments.”

The title was DeBorba’s second as a Hornet as he also won the Diablo Valley Intercollegiate in 2007.

Junior Grant Norton (79-73-68-220) made the biggest surge on the team as he finished tied for ninth overall with a final round of 68. Norton’s round was tied for the third lowest during the day, just one stroke back of two golfers.

Freshman Jake Johnson tied for 30th overall at 762-80-77-229. Fellow freshman Cameron Rappleye also recorded a 77 on Tuesday and tied for 37th overall with a total of 232. Senior Cody Miller completed the group in 47th place at 76-82-78-236.

British Columbia won the team title with a remarkable team score of 280 on Tuesday. The team concluded the tournament with a total of 873 and was 10 stokes ahead of host Cal Poly. Sacramento State (888), DePaul (894) and Cal State Stanislaus (896) rounded out the top five.
