RAPPLEYE LEADS MEN'S GOLF IN FIRST ROUND OF PACIFIC INVITATIONAL

STOCKTON, Calif. — Led by freshman Grant Rappleye’s 1-under round of 70, the Sacramento State men’s golf team is tied for sixth place after the first round of the Pacific Invitational on Monday.

The Hornets shot 287 as a team and are eight strokes behind Fresno State which holds the first-day lead at 279. Rice is second at 283 and is followed by Oregon (284), BYU (285) and Kansas State (285) in the top five.

Rappleye opened his round with six consecutive bogeys and then dropped to 2-under with an eagle of the par-5 16th hole. However, he double-bogeyed the par-3 17th before closing out his first nine holes with a birdie on the par-5 18th. Five more birdies started his front side and a birdie on the par-4 sixth was followed by two more pars. Rappleye bogeyed the par-4 ninth to end the side at even par.

Jeremy Harris and Scott DeBorba each shot a 1-over 72 and are tied for 20th place. Harris’ round featured two birdies and an eagle of the par-4 sixth hole. DeBorba carded two birdies as well and played his opening nine holes and 1-under.

The team also received a 73 from Grant Norton and a 74 from Cody Miller. Norton had three birdies during the day while Miller had four. However, Miller was setback by a double-bogey on 17 and a quadruple bogey on 18.

Fresno State’s Grant Doverspike holds a three-stoke edge in the individual race with a first-round 66. Doverspike his followed by four golfers at 69.

The three-round event continues on Tuesday with the second round at Brookside Country Club.
