MEN'S GOLF LEADS AMERICA SKY CHAMPIONSHIP AT MIDWAY POINT

HARTFORD, Conn. — Led by a 71 from senior Scott DeBorba, the Sacramento State men’s golf team is leading the America Sky Conference Championship following the opening round on Monday at the Ballymeade Country Club. The America Sky Championship is held in conjunction with the Hawks Invitational where the Hornets are tied for fifth place.

Rain cancelled the opening round on Sunday and has shortened the tournament to 36 holes. The final round will be held on Tuesday.

DeBorba shot 36 on the front nine and followed with 35 on the back half. He is tied for seventh overall in the field and has the lowest score among America Sky golfers. Freshman Grant Rappleye shot 36-38-74 and is tied for 24th overall and Cody Miller carded a round of 38-37-75 to tie for 34th. Cameron Rappleye and Grant Norton each fired a round of 76 to tie for 46th.

In the America Sky competition, the Hornets’ team score of 296 is seven strokes ahead of host Hartford’s (303). Defending champion Weber State is third at 310 while Texas Pan American and Binghamton are tied for fifth at 311.

Overall, the Hornets trail Baylor (284) for the team lead in the Hawks Invitational. TCU and Rhode Island are tied for second at 292 while North Carolina State shot 293. Sacramento State is tied with Mercer for fifth.

North Carolina State’s Matt Hill holds a three-stroke lead in the individual standings. Hill is trailed by Mercer’s Bill Jones III (69) and four golfers who shot 70 and are tied for third.
