MEN'S GOLF IN THE HUNT AFTER OPENING DAY OF AIR FORCE TOURNAMENT

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The Sacramento State men’s golf team opened its 2008-09 season with rounds of 290 and 299 in the opening day of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Saturday. The Hornets’ 36-hole total of 589 places the team in seventh place with 18 holes to play on Sunday.
Individually, junior Grant Norton opened the tournament with a 2-under round of 70 and then followed with a round of 75. Norton is tied for 14th place following the day at 145. Freshman Grant Rappleye ranks second on the team and is tied for 32nd overall with scores of 73-74-147. Twin brother Cameron Rappleye also had his score counted in both rounds after shooting 75-77-152.
Seniors Cody Miller and Scott DeBorba endured a roller-coaster day. DeBorba opened with a round of 72, which ranked second on the team, but followed with a round of 81 in the afternoon. Miller carded 78 in the morning but bounced back with a 73 to lead the team.
Colorado State and UNLV are tied for the team lead with a total of 560. Washington State is third at 578 while New Mexico (579) and Air Force (586) round out the top five. The Hornets lead fellow America Sky schools Weber State (T8, 590), Northern Colorado (11th, 591) and Utah Valley (17th, 617) after the first day.
Bryce Hanstad of Colorado State holds the individual lead after shooting 70-68-138. He is followed by teammate Riley Arp and Washington State’s Kevin Tucker who both totaled 139.
