HARRIS, NORTON EACH BREAK 70 IN FIRST DAY OF BILL CULLUM INVITATIONAL

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — The Sacramento State men’s golf team began the Bill Cullum Invitational in strong fashion, scoring 293 in the first round and following with a 297 in the second, Monday afternoon. The Hornets’ performance puts the team in fourth place with 18 holes left to be played on Tuesday.

Jeremy Harris led the way in the first round with a career-best 67. That score tied Harris for first place after the first round. Junior Scott DeBorba shot 74 and Grant Norton and Cody Miller each carded a 76. In the afternoon round, Norton posted a 68 to finish his day at 144. DeBorba and Miller tied with 76s and newcomer Brad Carricho added a 77. Harris shot 81.

Norton’s total ties him for ninth place while Harris is tied for 21st.

UC Santa Barbara shot 286-288-574 and leads the rest of the field by 11 strokes. Loyola Marymount is second at 296-289-585 while Portland (300-289-589), Sacramento State (293-297-590) and Southern Utah (304-288-592) completed the top five.

UCSB’s Michael Casca was the top individual on Monday, shooting 67-72-139.

The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
