MEN'S GOLF FINISHES SECOND AT AMERICA SKY CHAMPIONSHIP

9/25/2007

LAYTON, Utah — Junior Scott DeBorba shot back-to-back rounds of 72 to lead the Sacramento State men’s golf team to an eighth-place overall tie and a second-place finish in the inaugural America Sky Championship at the Purple and Red Invitational on Tuesday. The two-day event was held at the Valley View Golf Club. The first round of the tournament was canceled on Monday due to inclement weather.

Boise State overcame a six-stroke deficit following the first round and edge Utah by one stroke (567-568) to win the team title. The Broncos were led by Troy Merritt’s 69-65-134, which was the best individual score.

The tournament also served as the America Sky Conference Championship. The newly formed conference consists of eight schools across the country, including former Big Sky Conference members Idaho State, Sacramento State, and Weber State. Host Weber State shot 290-289-579 to win the first conference title while Sacramento State was five strokes back at 289-296-584.

Individually, the DeBorba tied for 19th overall and fourth in the conference standings. He was followed by Cody Miller who tied for 29th overall with rounds of 72-74-146. Jeremy Harris tied Miller at 74-72-146 and Kyle Candlish fired rounds of 71-78-149 to tie for 51st. Sophomore Grant Norton rounded out the group at 77-77-154 to tie for 72nd.

Nick Nelson of Utah Valley State was the America Sky medalist. Nelson shot 70-71-141 to defeat Weber State’s Keaton Woodland (69-73-142) by one stroke.

Sacramento State will return to action on Oct. 15 at the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge.
