SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State freshman Grant Norton was named to the 2007 all-independent men’s golf first team and was joined by sophomore Scott DeBorba on the all-newcomer team.
Norton was one of just five golfers named to the first team. He led the team with an average of 73.3 in seven tournaments and finished with three top-five showings. The Sheldon High School graduate finished second at the Div. I Independent Championships and broke the school 54-hole record in the process. Norton shot 68-72-69 to finish at 209. The record had been shared by current head coach Adam Pohll and former US Amateur runner-up Robert Hamilton. Earlier in the year, he tied for fourth at the Bill Cullum Intercollegiate and second at the Diablo Valley Intercollegiate.
Norton and DeBorba were also named to the five-member all-newcomer team. DeBorba played in all nine of Sacramento State’s tournaments and finished second on the team with a 75.1 scoring average. His season was highlighted by a victory at the Diablo Grande Intercollegiate. At that tournament, he shot 74-74-68-218.
UC Davis’ Louie Bishop was named the Independent Men’s Golfer of the Year and Longwood’s Adam Webb was the Newcomer of the Year.
The NCAA Div. I Independent golf awards were voted on by the school’s head coaches. The schools are comprised of Sacramento State, North Dakota State, Weber State, Utah Valley State, UC Davis, South Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Texas-Pan American, Longwood, IPFW, and Savannah State.
