4/27/2007
GREELEY, Colo. — Freshman Grant Norton shot a career-best 68 to lead the Sacramento State men’s golf team during the first round of the Div. I Independent Golf Championships on Friday. Norton’s total places him alone in first place and helped the team to a six-stroke lead after the first 18 holes.
The Hornets shot 283 on Friday to break its season low by three strokes. Utah Valley State carded 289 to sit in second and was followed by Idaho State (294), Northern Colorado (296), Weber State (296), North Dakota State (297) and South Dakota State (297). The three-round tournament will continue with the second round on Saturday and the final round on Sunday.
Norton opened Monday shooting a 3-under 33 during the first nine holes. The Sheldon High School graduate concluded his round with a 35 on the back nine. His total is one stroke better than a trio of golfers who are tied for second.
Norton was not the only Sacramento State golfer to post an impressive round on Friday. Jeremy Harris and Cody Miller were both in the red, shooting 70 and 71, respectively. The Hornets also received a 74 from Kyle Candlish and a 76 from Scott DeBorba.
