FINAL DAY CHARGE MOVES MEN'S GOLF INTO A TIE FOR FOURTH AT POOR BOY INVITATIONAL
2/27/2007
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Sophomores Cody Miller and Scott DeBorba each shot 73 to lead the Sacramento State men’s golf team in the third and final round of the CSUB Poor Boy Invitational on Tuesday. As a team, the Hornets recorded the second best score on the day and finished in a tie for fourth.
Sacramento State entered the day in 10th place but shot 294 during the final 18 holes. That score trailed only UCLA(288), who won the team title by 28 strokes. The Bruins finished the three-round tournament at 271-280-288-839. Host Cal State Bakersfield (287-282-298-867) and Sonoma State (281-293-297-871) were second and third, respectively. Grand Canyon tied the Hornets for fourth place. The Hornets' three-round total of 872 ranks fifth in school history and is the best since shooting 868 at the Pacific Invitational in 1997.
Consistency was the key for Sacramento State throughout the two days. Miller led the way at 70-72-73-215 to tie for 10th. His 54-hole score is tied for the sixth-best in school history. Kyle Candlish was two strokes behind in a tie for 15th place after shooting 71-72-74-217. Freshman Grant Norton shot rounds of 75, 72 and 74 to tie for 29th and DeBorba fired 76-73-73-222 to tie for 32nd. Jeremy Harris rounded out the Hornet contingent at 78-70-76-224 to tie for 44th.
UCLA’s Lucas Lee led from wire-to-wire to become the medalist. Lee opened the tournament with a 65 in the first round and followed with a 67 to hold the lead after the first day. He returned on Tuesday to shoot 70 and hold off Brady Baguio of Cal State Bakersfield and Kyle Hopkins of Sonoma State who each shot 206.
Sacramento State will next be in action at the Braveheart Classic hosted by UC Riverside beginning on March 5.
