PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — John Bowen shot 77 in the third and final round of the SMC/Merrill Lynch Invitational to lead Sacramento State on Tuesday. The tournament was held at Poppy Hills Golf Club. Bowen ended the tournament tied for 65th while the Hornets finished 18th.Lamar finished first in the team standings with a total of 299-295-297-891. The Cardinals were one stroke better than Xavier. Fresno State (908), UT-Arlington (909) finished third and fourth, respectively, while UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly each shot 916 to tie for eighth.
Fresno State''s Jason Anthony and Lamar''s Oliver Bekker tied for first place at 218. Bekker was the lone player in the field to break par on Tuesday, firing a 71.
Brian Little ranked second on the Hornets with rounds of 83, 79, and 80 to tie for 80th. Chad Wood shot 78-84-82-244 to tie for 84th and Cody Miller shot 79-84-82-245 to tie for 87th. Thomas Steinhoff, who led the team following the first two rounds, recorded 88 on Tuesday and ended in a tie for 91st.
Sacramento State will conclude its season at the Independent Golf Championships hosted by Northern Colorado on April 29 and 30.
