RENO, Nev.— Chad Wood and Margaux Sheehan led the men’s and women’s golf teams, respectively, at a pair of golf tournaments hosted by Nevada. Wood finished tied for 13th with a three-round total of 212 while Sheehan shot 244 to tie for 26th. As a team, the men finished 15th out of 18 while the women were eighth out of 12.Wood opened the tournament with a school and course record of 62 on Tuesday. He added a 76 in the afternoon round and was tied for first heading into the final day. However, the Fontana, Calif., native shot 76 on Wednesday and finished six strokes behind Matt Bortis of Arkansas who was the medalist at 69-74-63-206.
Host Nevada won the team title with a three-round score of 852. New Mexico State was two strokes back in second while Arkansas finished third with 856.
John Bowen was second on the team with rounds of 80-71-73-224 to tie for 57th place. Brian Little tied for 80th at 73-84-72-229, Thomas Steinhoff tied for 89th at 75-79-79-233 and Cody Miller tied for 94th at 76-79-79-234.
The men will next be in action on Oct. 24-25 at the Santa Clara Invitational.
The Hornet women closed out their tournament by finishing eighth at the Wolf Pack Invitational. Sacramento State shot 325 in the third and final round and ended the three-day event at 323-333-325-981. The Hornets were second among Big Sky Conference teams, finishing five strokes behind Weber State and six ahead of Eastern Washington.
Sheehan shot 84-79-81-244. Kim Coppin recorded the team low on Wednesday with a 77. The Hornets had a different player shoot the low round each day. Emily Longcrier tied for 31st at 78-86-82-246 and Jennifer Parkes tied for 47th with rounds of 80-85-85-250. Kim Coppin (47th, 92-83-77-252) and Erica Yoshino (t50th, 81-87-88) completed the Sacramento State lineup.
The women will next compete at the Lady Aztec Invitational on Oct. 17-18.
