SIMI VALLEY, Calif. --- Freshman Matt Montez shot 70 in his final two rounds to tie for eighth place at the Bill Cullum/Countrywide Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon at Wood Ranch Golf Club. As a team, the Hornets tied for 13th place with a three-round total of 904. Saint Mary’s won the event with a team score of 845.The Gaels recorded two of the top three finishers with Joe Lanza finishing as the medalist at 70-68-70-208. Chadd Cocco tied for second at 71-70-69-210. Montez was Sacramento State''s top finisher, tying for eighth with rounds of 75-70-70 to finish with 215.
Brian Little and Chad Wood were the closest Hornets behind Montez, tying for 64th. Little shot 77-73-81-231 while Wood fired 77-73-81-231. Tom Bingham tied for 76th at 72-78-89-239 and Ryan McConnell tied for 79th (86-76-79-241) to compete the Sacramento State lineup.
The event was the last for the team during the fall half of the season. The Hornets will next play on Feb. 7-8 at the Carson Daly Invitational hosted by Loyola Marymount.
