POCATELLO, Idaho --- Sacramento State senior Tanner Makimoto was named to the first team all-Independent golf team, it was announced today. Makimoto is one of five players to be placed on the team. Augusta State’s Emmett Turner was named Player of the Year, Weber State’s Barry Schenk was Freshman of the Year and Josh Gregory of Augusta State earned the Coach of the Year award.Makimoto appeared in all six of the men’s team’s events during the season. The Rocklin, Calif., native led the squad with an average of 73.72. He also recorded four top-15 finishes, including a third-place tie at the Sacramento State Invitational. During the season, he recorded two rounds of 70 and two rounds of 71.
The 2002-03 season marked the first year that Sacramento State competed as an independent in men’s golf. The team had participated in the Big Sky Conference from 1996-2002. The league discontinued men’s golf following the 2001-02 season after Eastern Washington and Portland State dropped their program.
