RANCHO MURIETA, Calif. – Three UC Riverside golfers finished in the top thirteen to lead the Highlanders to the team title in the final round of competition at the Sacramento State Invitational Tuesday afternoon. UCR shot 871 in the three-round tournament at Rancho Murieta Country Club. Cal State Stanislaus finished second (875) after shooting the top final round score of 285.
Sacramento State finished tied for in the 13 team field. The tournament is the first of the spring for the Hornets.
Brenden Steele of UC Riverside earned the medalist honors and was the only competitor to finish under-par (-1) for the tournament. Steele shot rounds of 68, 75 and 72 for a total of 215, edging Dan Warburton of Cal State Bakersfield by one stroke. Bill Sutt and Mark Lawless of Cal State Stanislaus, Joe Lanza of Saint Mary’s and Cameron Nelson of UC Riverside tied for third with scores of 217.
Sacramento State finished 57 strokes behind the Highlanders in the team standings. The Hornets were led by Craig Callens who tied for 28th with a total of 228.
