SIMI VALLEY, Calif.— The Sacramento State men’s golf team opened its 2001-02 season by tying for eighth place at the Countrywide Home Loans Intercollegiate. The three-round tournament, which took place on Oct. 15-16, was held at the Wood Ranch Golf Club.UC Irvine captured the team title with a three-round total of 871. The Anteaters finished 11 strokes better than second-place Cal State Bakersfield (882). The Hornets completed the tournament at 897. Sacramento State finished second among Big Sky teams in the field. Eastern Washington led the league’s teams at 895 to finish sixth. Portland State (11th, 905) and Weber State (20th, 921) rounds out the other conference schools.
Individually, Brandon Hillpot of UC Riverside shot rounds of 69, 70 and 69 to claim the medalist honors. Cal Poly’s Zach King and Eastern Washington’s Trevor Fox tied for second at 213. Sacramento State was led by sophomore Zack Spinuzzi who shot 72-73-74-219 to tie for 12th place. Senior Bill Hurwitz tied for 16th with rounds of 74, 72 and 74 for a total of 220.
The men return to the links on Oct. 29-30 at the Cal State Bakersfield Invitational.
