WILLIAMS TAKES LEAD, MEN FIFTH AT FOLINO INVITATIONAL
Ryan Williams holds a two-stroke lead after 36 holes of the Folino Invitational.
CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. — Senior Ryan Williams took over sole possession of first place with a 2-under par round of 70 during the second round of the Folino Invitational on Monday.
Williams entered the day tied for first but now owns a two shot advantage with his second under-par performance of the tournament. The Clovis, Calif., native will be looking for his first career victory following the final round on Tuesday.
In the second round, Williams began with a birdie on the par-5 first hole but eventually moved to 1-over after bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6. A birdie on the par-5 eighth dropped him back to even only to bogey the par-3 fourth. Williams then played his final nine holes at 3-under with birdies on the par-4 12th and 17th and the par-3 15th.
He is one of just three golfers in the field to score in the red in both rounds of the tournament. UC Irvine's Pete Fernandez is second overall at 71-70-141 and two golfers are tied for third.
"Ryan's playing really well," said Sacramento State men's head coach Christopher Hall. "He's coming off a consistent fall and picked up where he left off. He's doing everything he needs to do to post a good score."
As a team, the Hornets are in fifth place and are 16 strokes behind UCI. Sacramento State improved its first-day performance by one stroke and has three golfers ranked among the top 20 in the tournament. Long Beach State (583) and Cal State Fullerton (586) are also above the team in the standings.
Sophomore Owen Taylor and freshman Aaron Beverly each shot 75 during the second round for Sacramento State. Taylor was 2-over on the front nine and shot 37 on the back. He had two birdies during his round and is tied for 28th overall at 79-75-154.
Beverly began his round with a birdie on No. 1 and was even through his first 12 holes. He eventually jumped to 4-over through 16 but birdied the par-5 18th.
Jordan Weir and Jordan Swanson added rounds of 76 as all five Sacramento State golfers were within 4-over par. Weir and Beverly are tied for 19th place while Swanson moved into a tie for 23rd.
On Monday, Weir recorded three birdies, 10 pars, three bogeys and two double-bogeys. Swanson carded two birdies, 11 pars, four bogeys and two double-bogeys.
