MEN'S GOLF OPENS 17-STROKE LEAD AFTER FIRST ROUND OF AMERICA SKY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cameron Rappleye holds the individual lead and the Hornets lead the team standings at the America Sky Championship.
NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. —Cameron Rappleye led four Hornets who shot 74 or better to help the team open a 17 stroke lead during the first round of the America Sky Championship on Sunday at Lake of Isles.
Rappleye shot 71 and holds the individual lead. The senior began his day with three pars before bogeying the par-4 fourth hole. He made the turn even with four pars and a birdie on the par-3 seventh. Rappleye eventually fell to 2-under with birdies on the par-3 11th and the par-5 12th. A bogey on the par-4 13th moved him to 1-under where he remained with the help of five pars.
Sophomore Ryan Williams is in second with an even-par 72. Williams was 2-over through his first five holes and 3-over through 14 before making his charge. He earned his first shot back with a birdie on the par-5 15th. Following a par on No. 16, he ended his round with birdies on the par-4 17th and 18th.
Senior Jake Johnson also made his push on the back nine to finish at 1-over 73 which ties him for third place. Johnson's round featured five birdies, seven pars and six bogeys. He was 3-over at the midway point of his round and 4-over through 13. Johnson then closed with birdies on Nos. 14, 15 and 17 along with two pars.
Jordan Weir completed the scorers for the team with a 2-over 74 which ties him for fifth. Weir played the front nine at 3-over with six pars and three bogeys. A double-bogey on 10 was his final blemish in his round as he played the final eight holes at 3-under with birdies on Nos. 12, 14 and 15.
Grant Rappleye contributed a round of 78 and is tied for 20th place. The senior shot 39 on both the front and back sides of the course and ended his round with one birdie, 10 pars and seven bogeys.
The second round of the three-round tournament will take place on Monday.
