DAVIDSON'S 67 LEADS MEN'S GOLF IN FIRST ROUND AT KA'ANAPALI

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Ethan Davidson tied his career best with a round of 67 and the Sacramento State men's golf team was 2-over par during the first round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic on Friday. The Hornets totaled 286 as a team on the par-71 course and are in 15th place.

Davidson started on the 10th hole and parred his first four holes. He stopped the streak with a bogey on the par-4 14th before answering with a birdie on the par-3 15th. Davidson was 2-over at the turn following bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18. The sophomore blistered the front nine to finish at 4-under for the round. He birdied the par-5 first and par-4 third to get back to even. After two pars, he birdied the par-5 sixth and par-4 seventh to get to 2-under. Davidson ended his day with a par on No. 17 and then eagled the 485-yard, par-5 ninth. His total ties him for 12th place overall and is three strokes off the lead.

Joe Fowler ranked second on the team and is tied for 69th overall with a round of 72. Fowler started his round with birdies on the par-4 11th and 12th holes but had bogeys on Nos. 13 and 18. He was 1-under through nine holes following a birdie on the par-5 first. Fowler eventually climbed to 2-over after bogeys on Nos. 4, 7 and 8 before responding with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.

Riley Bell was one stroke back of Fowler and Jeff Carr was one behind Bell to complete the team total. Bell began on the 12th hole with a bogey and was 2-over before a birdie on No. 1. After a bogey on No. 2, he birdied the par-4 third and fourth holes to fall back to even. Bell then traded pars and bogeys over the next four holes to move to 2-over. He birdied the par-5 ninth and bogeyed the par-4 10th.

Carr was even through his first six holes but then bogeyed Nos. 18, 1 and 2. After three pars, he added birdies on the par-5 sixth and par-4 seventh. A double bogey on No. 18 was trailed by two pars.

Jonathan Tanihana shot 74 while competing as an individual. Tanihana had an eagle, two birdies, three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. Casey Leebrick had a round of 77 with three birdies, four bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.

Sacramento State will play the second round with Hawaii, Southern Illinois and Wyoming with a shot gun start at 11:30 a.m. PT.
