THREE 71S HELPS MEN'S GOLF MOVE UP AT BILL CULLUM INVITATIONAL

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. --- The Sacramento State men's golf team closed the Bill Cullum Invitational with a 1-under round of 287 with the help of three 71s on Tuesday at Wood Ranch Golf Club. The Hornets moved up one spot to finish in seventh place out of 13 teams.

Joe Fowler, Casey Leebrick and Christian James each shot a 1-under par round of 71 to lead the team during the final round. Fowler tied for 25th overall at 70-73-71-214. The 54-hole total was the second best of his career while the 70 in the first round is tied for his third best as a Hornet. On Tuesday, the sophomore started on the fourth hole and parred his first six. He opened the back nine with a double bogey on the par-4 10th to move to 2-over. Following three pars, Fowler birdied the par-4 14th and par-5 15th. He then added two more pars before a birdie on the par-5 18th. A bogey on the first hole was followed by a birdie on the par-5 second and a par on the third.

Leebrick matched the score with a round comprised of an eagle, three birdies and four bogeys. The sophomore bogeyed his first hole and bounced between 1-over and even through his first 10 holes. After a bogey on the par-4 16th took him to 1-over, he eagled the 521-yard, par-5 18th to drop under par for the first time during the round. Leebrick added a birdie on the par-5 second to fall to 2-under but had a bogey on the par-4 fourth. Overall, he tied for 42nd place at 72-76-71-219.

James tied his career best with a 71 of his own for his low of the tournament. James was steady throughout the third round with three birdies and two bogeys to accompany 13 pars. He started on the seventh hole and was 1-over after a bogey on No. 9. He immediately birdied the 10th and remained even through the 18th hole with eight consecutive pars. James returned to 1-over with a bogey on the par-4 first but, again, responded with a birdie on the next hole. After three more pars, he closed the tournament with a birdie on the par-5 fifth.

Eric Olsem and Josh Diaz each shot 74 to account for the final score towards the team total. Olsem bogeyed the par-4 ninth (his third hole) and fluctuated between 1- and 2-over for most of the round. He had four birdies with four bogeys and a double bogey. Diaz bogeyed his first hole (No. 5) but dropped back to even with a birdie on the par-4 12th. He was still even through the first hole after a bogey on No. 16 and a birdie on 18 but double bogeyed the par-5 second. Diaz shot 70-73-74-217 to tie for 35th overall while Olsem tied for 61st at 73-76-74-223.

Sacramento State also had a pair of individuals in the field in Riley Bell and Jonathan Tanihana. Bell overcame a rough start in the first day to shoot 73 on Tuesday. The sophomore opened with four straight pars beginning in No. 15. His first bogey came on No. 1 but was quickly followed by a birdie on the par-3 third. He had bogeys on Nos. 5 and 8 and parred his final five holes.

Tanihana shot 74 on Tuesday after rallying over his final four holes. The junior began with a birdie on the par-5 18th but found himself 5-over following bogeys on Nos. 4 and 7 and a quadruple bogey on the par-4 10th. However, he birdied the par-4 11th and then eagled the 537-yard, par-5 15th to get back to 2-over.

San Diego State added to its first day lead to win the team title by 22 strokes. The Aztecs finished the event at 40-under par and were led by Puwit Anupansuebsai who shot 63-66-69-198 to become the medalist at 18-under.

Sacramento State will return to action next week at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at The Reserve at Spanos Park. The three-day, three-round tournament gets underway on Monday, Sept. 21.
