MEN'S GOLF TIGHTLY PACKED AFTER FIRST ROUND OF NICK WATNEY INVITATIONAL

FRESNO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team played the opening two rounds of the Nick Watney Invitational on Monday and saw all six of its golfers finish within two strokes of one another. Jeff Carr and Ethan Davidson each totaled 144 and are tied for 35th place while Joe Fowler, Christian James, Casey Leebrick and Jonathan Tanihana are tied for 53rd with a 36-hole score of 146.

The Hornets are in ninth place at 8-over par. Long Beach State and BYU are tied for the lead at 14-under while host Fresno State is one stroke back.

James had the low score for Sacramento State in the first round with a 1-over par round of 72. He started on the 17th hole and parred his first five holes. James then bogeyed the par-4 fourth and the par-3 seventh to move to 2-over. He added eight more pars before ending the morning with a birdie on the par-5 16th hole.

Carr and Davidson each shot 73 in the opening round to finish at 2-over par. Carr opened on the 14th hole and moved to 1-under with a birdie on the par-5 16th. He moved back to even after a bogey on the first hole and found himself at 2-over following bogeys on the par-3 third and seventh. A third par-3 bogey on the 11th hole temporarily brought him to 3-over before he responded with a birdie on the par-5 12th.

Davidson started with a par on the 15th and followed with bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17. On the front nine, he had bogeys on the par-3 third, par-4 fifth and par-3 seventh to move to 5-over. From there, Davidson birdied the par-4 eight, par-5 ninth and par-5 12th to close at 2-over.

Fowler completed the team score with a round of 74 to finish at 3-over. Like Davidson, he bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 to jump to 2-over par early in his round. His first bogey came on the par-4 first, but following bogeys on Nos. 3 and 6, he stood at 3-over. Fowler eagled the 505-yard par-5 ninth and stayed at 1-under through the 12th hole. He ended his morning round with a bogey on No. 13 and double bogey on the par-4 14th and a birdie on the par-4 15th.

In the second round, Casey Leebrick paced the team with a 1-under round of 70. Leebrick, who shot 76 in the first round, was 2-over through his first three holes. He returned to even with birdies on the par-4 second and fifth holes. A bogey on the par-3 seventh kept him at 1-over until a birdie on the par-5 12th. Leebrick closed his day with a birdie on the par-5 16th.

Carr and Davidson each shot 71 to finish even in the second round. Carr was 3-over through his first 11 holes with one birdie and four bogeys. He rallied with birdies on the par-5 ninth, par-4 10th and par-5 12th to finish at 71. Davidson took a similar, but steadier approach to the second round. He had bogeys on the par-3 17th and par-4 fourth before evening his round with birdies on the par-4 eighth and 10th.

Fowler again added the fourth score toward the team total with a 72. He bogeyed his first two holes (Nos. 16 and 17) and stayed at 2-over until birdies on the par-4 eighth, par-5 ninth and par-3 11th took him to 1-under. Fowler traded bogeys and birdies over his final four holes.

The final round will have a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The Hornets will be paired with UC Irvine, Gonzaga and Seattle U on holes Nos. 10-13.
